On 4 July 2024, Faber will release Adam, the debut poetry collection by the late Gboyega Odubanjo, a vital and unforgettable voice in contemporary literature.

Both a celebration of his life and a continuation of his legacy, Adam stands as a testament to Odubanjo’s exceptional talent and unflinching exploration of complex themes. The collection was carefully finalized by a group of his close friends and fellow poets, with the support of his family, ensuring his vision remained intact.

Lavinia Greenlaw, Poetry Editor at Faber, said:
“This is poetry that dares to see clearly, to ask difficult questions, and to seek meaningful answers. It’s a privilege to publish work that is as courageous as it is brilliant.”

About Adam: A Story of Loss and Legacy

The collection takes its name from a haunting event in 2001, when the remains of a young Black boy, nicknamed “Adam” by police, were found in the River Thames. Gboyega Odubanjo uses this tragedy as a lens to examine questions of identity, justice, and the value of Black lives, drawing from the Genesis myth and Yoruba cultural heritage.

Odubanjo wrote:
“What comes next cannot without a story of water and offering. The sun shines and we gather because the river allows it. Na from clap dem dey enter dance. We enter with, and as, Adam.”
